I feel this is an important piece of information to include in my website, please see below for details of my injury and ongoing care and needs.
I had a swimming pool accident on the 5th August 2006 which resulted in having a C6 burst fracture. I was transferred to a specialist hospital, the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, Middlesex. My consultant Mr Taylor repaired my vertebrae using a titanium plate and part of my hip. Unfortunately there was significant damage to my spinal cord which has left me paralysed from the chest down and with a C6 incomplete tetraplegic spinal code injury. I have limited hand function and my chest muscles are not working, so I breathe using my diaphragm.
It became very clear early on that my needs would be extensive and ongoing for the rest of my life, if I was going to be able to have as much independence as possible/have a good quality of life and achieve the goals I have set myself.
It is very important that I have wheelchairs that are fitted to me and designed for my level of injury so that I can propel myself and be more independent in the future. I need a standing frame to help with my posture, digestive system and keep my muscles and tendons in my legs supple. None of these are funded by the local authority.
The Trust was set up to help achieve some of my goals for my future wellbeing, helped with the advice of the rehabilitation team at Stanmore. All the money raised will be carefully utilised by the Trustees, not only to ensure we obtain the best care and equipment available, but also that we acquire the correct and necessary equipment, whilst ensuring value for money.
As I grow stronger I want to become more involved with fund raising, so that I am able to help other people with spinal injuries.
